Henderson Rotary’s satellite club Rotalite West has a great ongoing relationship with Nurturing Families (a West Auckland based charity whose mission is to to deliver indispensable aid to families and to provide emotional and educational support, fostering the growth and development of both families and children). Nurturing Families, a registered not-for-profit charity since 2012, collaborates with front-line social support sevices to offer comprehensive assistance, helping approximately 6,000 children annually.
We’ve done a number of projects for Nurturing Families, including making them the recipients of our Christmas Extravaganza fundraiser, a number of working bees helping them sort donations. In 2024 we decided we’d like to help them in another way – by combining our funds with a generous grant from The Rotary Foundation via a District Grant from Rotary District 9910, we were able to purchase and then assemble 15 sets of shelves. These shelves will initially be used for Nurturing Families Christmas programme where they receive presents for children which otherwise may miss out. Nurturing Families receives donations which they then match up with children referred by social agencies. A lack of shelving meant that last year things got very messy with presents everywhere and it also limited their ability to fulfil demand. Our shelf donation will make a big difference in Nurturing Families ability to deliver this year. At the completion of the programme, these shelves will go to Nurturing Families warehouse to be used right throughout the year to help store and manage the donations they receive, before and after sorting.
It was a lot of fun to assemble the shelves – our team came in one evening and made quick work of the assembly, whilst eating pizza and drinking wine or soft drinks!
