Henderson Rotary loves supporting hard working local community groups. One such group is the Shakti Community Council. Shakti Community Council is a non-profit organisation serving migrant and refugee women of Asian, African and Middle Eastern origin. Shakti; meaning strength; works to end all forms of violence and discrimination against women of colour. It supports women to overcome the barriers that come with migration and inter-generational bonds of cultural oppression. Led by ethnic women for ethnic women, Shakti is dedicated to promoting and protecting human rights of both women and children and advocating social change.
Shakti’s head office is in Henderson, less than 500 metres from Henderson Rotary’s meeting venue. The property was looking a little run down and in need of some TLC. Henderson Rotary offered to come in and spruce things up. This turned into a number of working bees including waterblasting, painting, concreting, demolishing an old unsafe deck railing and replacing it, pruning trees, clearing gutters and applying anti moss and lichen treatments to the roof.
The working bees have provided an opportunity for a large number of Henderson’s members to be involved with tasks available for any level of skill or physical prowess!
The team from Shakti have been very grateful and impressed with the work done by Henderson’s Rotarians and it has certainly made their workplace look a lot nicer and something they can take pride in.
